Provides expert cytotechnology skills, in all areas of the cytology department.Proficiency and expertise in the handling, processing, and microscopic examination/reporting of all cytology specimens. Must have knowledge andexpertise in both GYN and NON-GYN cytology.Assists providers and/or pathologists in FNA and all other procedures involved in the procurement of specimens for cytological examination.Must strictly adhere to detail in the technical performance, solving practical and analytic problems.
ResponsibilitiesPre-analytical phase of cytology testing ·Determines acceptability of specimens within guidelines ·Performs slide preparation, screening and ensures appropriate specimen handling on all endoscopy procedure and FNA. ·Stores specimens under appropriate conditions as quickly as possible ·Ensures reagents used to process and stain specimens are dated, of sufficient quantity and within expiration limits ·Identifies and differentiates an adequate, well prepared, well stained, cytology specimen ·Performs processing/ordering computer functions ·Coordinates schedules, orientates and trains cytology staff ·Reports LIS issuesand assists with troubleshooting ·Incorporates new procedures or revisions as needed ·Makes decisions regarding methods or processes used for cytology preparations |
Analytical phase of cytology testing ·Systematically screens slides to detect abnormalities ·Consistently marks abnormalities when making a cytological diagnosis ·Performs quality control and participates in Cytology CAP surveys ·Able to identify, classify and discuss normal/abnormal appearing cells ·Interprets cytological patterns associated with hormones, physical agents, chemical agents, infectious and other conditions ·Acts as resource for cytology technical questions ·Performs triage, orders and interprets all HPV cases ·Organizes and distributes CAP surveys and reviews missed cases with pathologist |
Quality Operations and Regulatory Compliance ·Dates all kits, QC, reagents in use, dates and restocks reagents and supplies, unpacks supplies and stores in appropriate location, files slides and patient information cards. ·Cleans and maintains microscopes, refrigerators, other equipment used, as well as work and storage areas. Reports problems to the biomedical department |
Education: | Bachelor’s Degree with one year of formal training in a school approved by the American Medical Association |

License(s)/Certification(s): | Cytotechnologist (CT, ASCP) certified or eligible Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. |
